Great LEGO challenge.

December 21, 2018

When I do my Building Events with LEGO, I once in a while do a LEGO challenge and this one below, is one of my favourites. It is not the easiest for the children to complete, but when they get their head around it, it is awesome to see how they can work together as a team to complete the task.

Material:

Duplo Bricks and Duplo baseplates

A table for each group

A piece of material to cover the models with

Three to four models built of Duplo, please see the photos below.

Preparation:

Make three to four very different Duplo models which fits with the age group of your children. The first one has to be very simple for the children to get a feeling of ‘we can do this’. The other models have to be gradually a little more difficult than the one before. If you have teenagers in your group or grown-ups you can use LEGO bricks and make the models more difficult. Set up a table with a pile of Duplo Bricks and a base plate for each group.

Step 1: Organise the children.

Divide the children into teams of three-five children in each group, send them to a table with Duplo and give the children inside each group a number from one to five. They are not allowed to touch the LEGO before the challenge starts.

Step 2: Instruct the children.

Tell the children that they have to build an exact copy of your model which is covered under a piece of material. Instruct the children that only one child from each team can come up and see the model at a time and you start with child number one and this child have to instruct the others how to build it. After a few minutes you will call up child number two to have a second look, then child number three and so on. The group can continue coming up one child at a time until their models are completed.

The challenge stops when all the groups have finished their build and the winning group is the first one to complete the model.

The first model is hard for the children to complete, but then they slowly get the hang of it.

The second time we did this challenge in our club the children knew straight away what to do and were even planning how to work best as a team regarding each team member’s strengths.
